Chapter 14: The Final Stretch

Volume 1: Ghostwater Village

At that exact moment…

Li Yin slammed the brakes.

“Wh-what is it, Li Yin?!” Kexin cried out, startled. The ghostly woman vanished into mist.

Li Yin clutched the wheel. “Something doesn’t feel right…”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s all going too smoothly. Xia Yuan told me once, ‘What’s terrifying isn’t the strange—but when everything seems normal.’ In these tasks, nothing is scarier than when everything goes according to plan.”

“But…” Kexin glanced around. “Maybe we’re overthinking…”

Li Yin sighed. “Maybe. But we can’t relax. Not even for one second—until we step through that apartment door.”

He restarted the car.

Finally, they entered the city. Both exhaled in relief.

X City and K City were close, and traffic was light this late at night. The neon lights of the city were comforting.

But the closer they got to the apartment, the quieter and darker the roads became.

“Kexin…”

“What is it—AAAH!”

Kexin screamed and pointed at Li Yin’s window!

A ghastly, pale face was pressed against the glass!

“What?!” Li Yin turned to look—nothing.

He pulled over and jumped out with Kexin. They decided to run the rest of the way.

They sprinted like mad. The apartment gate came into view!

The place was poorly managed—no gate, no security. But ironically, that had kept them unnoticed.

They dashed toward the familiar alley.

“Kexin! We’re going to survive!”

As they entered the alley, nerves ran high.

What would the ghost do?

Would she appear?

Xia Yuan and the others were at the building’s entrance, watching Li Yin and Kexin approach!

“Li Yin!” Xia Yuan shouted from behind the glass. “Hurry!”

Ten meters… eight… six… four… three… two…

One!

Li Yin reached for the rotating door—

Suddenly, everything blurred. When he looked again, the apartment was twenty meters away!

What?! How?!

It was like an unreachable shore. He couldn’t move forward!

“No!” he cried, running again—only to be pulled back every time.

Then he saw something that froze him in terror.

A pair of massive white feet appeared beside the building.

A ghostly woman, towering as tall as the apartment, emerged.

Summer Yuan and the others were panicked. Tang Wenshan just watched coldly.

The giant woman walked toward Li Yin and Kexin.

“No…” Li Yin whispered in utter despair.

He couldn’t get inside. He couldn’t fight her.

What now?

The woman bent down, jaw stretching open—revealing an endless flood of water inside her mouth.

“I don’t want to die…” Kexin sobbed. “I never told Xia Yuan… I like him…”

Li Yin clenched his fists, searching for a way out.

But then—Kexin felt her body being submerged…

In the next moment, she was inside the ghost’s mouth.

It closed.

When it reopened—she was gone.

Kexin was dead.

She was truly gone.

Li Yin had one thought left—run.

He turned and fled.

But if he didn’t reach the apartment in 48 hours… death would still come.

Could he escape?

The ghost caught up in a single step.

Her gaping mouth neared…

Then—

Two pale arms reached out from inside her mouth!

Another ghostly head emerged—horrifying, savage, full of hate.

This new ghost grabbed the first one, violently holding her back.

Li Yin stared—then recognized the face.

It was… Axiu!

“Thank you… thank you, Axiu!”

Her obsession and hatred had made her even more terrifying—but she had saved him.

And because of her, he could approach the apartment again!

With one final burst, Li Yin sprinted forward—

And entered the building.

He was alive.

Once again, he had survived.

He collapsed on the lobby floor, gasping for breath. Outside, Axiu’s ghost still fought to emerge from the other’s body. The others could only stare in stunned silence.

Back in Ghostwater Village

Li Bing knocked gently on Axiu’s door—only to find it ajar.

Inside… no one.

“Axiu…” she murmured to the empty room, heart sinking.

In the end, the two sisters had missed their reunion.

The two giant ghosts roared and shrieked—until both vanished in smoke outside the apartment.

Bing’er jie…
If fate allows,
Let’s be sisters again in the next life.

Li Yin, barely conscious on the floor, heard only fragments of those words…

Then blacked out.
